Department Overview

This position supports ongoing research in the laboratory of Dr. Angela Ozburn. The person in this role will integrate statistics with biology. The individual will design biological experimentations, predominantly in the field of neuroscience, and will be responsible for the compilation, summarization, and scrutiny of statistics from those experiments, and the elucidation of, and conclusion from, the outcomes. The individual will play a significant role in planning, designing and completing independent research studies, and will assist and perform in team research projects that examine the effects of behavioral, pharmacological, and genetic manipulations on drug- and mood-related behaviors in mice. Studies focus on identification of neural circuitry and the roles that genetics, environment, and experience play in alcohol and drug effects, use, and dependence.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Works independently or as part of a team. Collaborates with researchers, project team or collaborators in development of research questions, statistical analysis plan, and final reports or publications. This role involves high level innovation and problem solving. Analyzes data and prepares tables for interim and final reports. Designs and carries out statistical procedures for large data sets for specific research studies. Writes entire sections of reports and publications. Has a detailed understanding of various large and complex data sources and how to leverage them to accomplish research or evaluation objectives.
  • Provides direction and guidance to support personnel and/or supervise post-doctoral/graduate/undergraduate trainees. May oversee the work of trainees, including monitoring and assessing data management, data quality, data analysis, coding conventions, and presentation of results, with an eye toward accuracy and consistency. Keeps abreast of new data sources and statistical methods relevant to the field (e.g., High dimensional Omics data, data mining, machine learning, advancements in existing methodological approaches). May advise partners (academic investigators, clinicians, policymakers, government officials, etc.).
  • Participates in or leads subject matter/technical workshops or other training activities. Deep knowledge or specialized skills in areas such as: statistical methods, econometrics, machine learning methods, coding/programming in industry-standard data analysis software (e.g. R, Stata, SAS), coding conventions and reproducible research practices, data management, cost or quality measurement, data validation, health economics, state or national health care policy and policy reforms. Stays informed on recent work and publications in this area and in the field of addiction neuroscience.
  • Contribute to organizational design of projects and budgets through acquisition of grants or projects, and assist with grant progress reports.
  • Assists with husbandry and maintenance of animal colonies on an as needed basis. Assists with experiments on an as needed basis. Other tasks as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field; OR Master's Degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field AND 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Equivalent combination of Bachelor's in relevant field in conjunction with training and experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with and analyzing large data sets and publishing findings.
  • Informatics statistical design, pipeline development, and omics data and network analysis, and visualization expertise.


Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics, with theoretical and computational focus;
  • Expertise in bioinformatics (gene expression data, brain circuitry data)
  • Expertise in R
