The ideal candidate will have 2-4 years of hands-on experience supporting or managing environmental permitting and compliance activities, and will be a detail-oriented, organized, and safety-minded individual. As the Environmental Specialist you’ll be the subject-matter expert in environmental program management, with a focus on compliance, permitting, and reporting. You’ll lead the development and implementation of environmental programs and ensure the compliance of activities at facilities located in CA, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance and navigating complex environmental regulations.

 

They will work well independently and with a team and be a motivated self-starter. This position will support all lines of business (aggregates, asphalt, ready-mix) for 2 Operating Companies (Northgate Ready-Mix & BoDean Company) and may have future opportunities in the Northwest Region.

Location: This is an in-person position based out of Santa Rosa, CA. Local commutes to pit/plant locations as needed, and potential for travel within the Northwest Region (Northern CA, WA, OR, ID, MT) which may include up to 25% overnight travel.

 

Shift:  Primarily work 8 – 10 hours per day, 5 days per week.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science or closely related field.
  • 2 – 4 years’ experience securing environmental permits, ensuring regulatory compliance, conducting reporting duties, or closely related activities, for environmental programs such as air quality, water resources, stormwater management, water discharge procedures, spill prevention control and countermeasures, and others.
  • You're a self-starter who takes initiative and can work independently, driving projects to completion.
  • You exhibit critical thinking skills, allowing you to analyze complex situations and develop effective solutions.
  • You possess nimble learning abilities, quickly grasping new concepts and applying them to your work.
  • You have strong organizational skills, enabling you to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity, making decisions with incomplete information.
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills, conveying complex information clearly.
  • You have working knowledge of PC Programs and the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • A valid driver’s license, current authorization to work in the United States, and the ability to pass pre-employment controlled-substance testing.

 

Work Requirements:

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Obtain all environmental permits required for company plants, sites, and projects.
  • Develop and implement environmental compliance plans for programs such as air quality, stormwater discharges, oil spill prevention or control, recycling, managing hazardous materials, and employee education.
  • Maintain documentation compliance activities such as inspections, audits, complaints, and investigations.
  • Review required documentation at all sites, projects, and plants to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Conduct compliance reviews, inspections, and internal audits to ensure adherence with all applicable environmental permits, rules, and regulations.
  • Provide educational events and training to all company employees on environmental policies, issues, best practices and responsibilities. May occasionally include outreach to contractors.
  • Participate in environmental education and research relevant to industry.
  • Report all violations of environmental permits, rules, and regulations to company management personnel and, when required by operational permits, to duly authorized regulatory agencies.
  • Keep informed regarding changes to environmental legislation, trends, and best practices and assess the potential impact these changes will have on company operations.
  • Communicates accurately and knowledgeably with various government agencies regarding regulatory programs, permits and compliance matters.
  • Lead implementation of compliance-related policies and procedures throughout the company.
  • Participate as needed with sustainability initiatives throughout the company
  • Provide input and analysis on new or proposed operational activities, operational locations, and regulatory plans and programs.
  • Advise field and middle managers on use of any environmental compliance or reporting tools which are available for them (EMS).
  • Assist, on occasion, with land use permitting activities including conditional use, rezones, etc.
  • Direct all activities focused on environmental compliance.
  • File all compliance or annual reports required by regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in environmental education and research relevant to industry.
  • Carry out all assigned tasks and projects in a timely manner.
  • Participate in and promote an inclusive work environment.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
