Job Description

Fitter/Welder

Days 6am-2:45pm

$18-$30 per hour

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The welder-fitter will need to be proficient in MIG and Flux Core with the ability to pass 2G or 3G weld test.

TIG is a plus!

Must be able to read engineering sketches and drawings, understand welding symbols.

Computer skills are required for working within the ERP system.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS 

  • Lay out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications. 
  • Determines required equipment, welding method and welding techniques. 
  • Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.
  • Ignites torch and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc. 
  • Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies. 
  • Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment. 
  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. 
  • Removes rough spots from work piece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper. 
  • Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments. 
  • Follow blueprints to arrange metal pieces and temporarily fix them into position before welding.
  • Keep work area clean and organized.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, grasp, push and pull material of various sizes and weights for long periods of time. 

Must regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds, using proper lifting techniques, help from another employee or other available resources such as lifting or moving equipment.

Must be detail oriented, self-motivated and disciplined with the ability to multi-task.

* Use hand-welding, flame-cutting, hand-soldering, or brazing equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products.
* Examine workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
* Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
* Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals.
* Determine required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
* Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required.
* Grind, cut, buff, or bend edges of workpieces to be joined to ensure snug fit, using power grinders and hand tools.
* Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
* Melt and apply solder along adjoining edges of workpieces to solder joints, using soldering irons, gas torches, or electric-ultrasonic equipment.
* Position and secure workpieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools.
* Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
* Melt and apply solder to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products, using soldering equipment.
* Check grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometers, calipers, and precision measuring instruments.
* Hammer out bulges or bends in metal workpieces.
* Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and operations.
* Operate metal shaping, straightening, and bending machines, such as brakes and shears.
