Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist I

Location: Remote or On-site (Based on Business Needs)

Job Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $20–$23 per hour

Position Overview

The Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist I supports the accurate and timely processing of medical documentation to ensure clean and compliant claim submission. This role involves retrieving, reviewing, and indexing clinical documentation into health information systems. The position also provides administrative support and contributes to ongoing billing and quality improvement efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Retrieve and process patient medical records and supporting documentation
  • Identify and resolve missing or incomplete documentation using multiple systems and communication channels
  • Accurately label and categorize documents within electronic or paper-based medical records
  • Validate medical record data for billing accuracy and documentation standards
  • Perform administrative tasks including scanning, faxing, filing, data entry, supply ordering, and correspondence
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and protect sensitive health information
  • Meet daily and weekly processing targets aligned with department expectations
  • Support general billing and documentation improvement efforts
  • May provide front-desk or visitor assistance depending on location
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and upkeep of scanning and office equipment

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Entry-level experience in HIM, medical billing, or medical records processing
  • Familiarity with EMR systems and clinical documentation workflows
  • Basic understanding of CPT, ICD-10, and medical terminology preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and general computer operations
  • Comfortable handling confidential information in compliance with HIPAA guidelines
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures
  • Capable of managing workload in a deadline-driven environment
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required
