This position will take lead responsibilities in planning and implementing restoration and vegetation management projects on Department lands, prepare and update land management plans, draft and assist in managing contracts, coordinate field work activities, collect and organize data, submit project tracking and monitoring requirements, prepare environmental compliance documents and correspondence.

Environmental Scientist:

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer including familiarity with Microsoft Office software. Responsibilities are split between office and field work. Office work will entail researching reviewing and developing documents in addition to working with Regional staff, interact with headquarters staff and members of the public via e-mail, telephone and through virtual meetings. Possession of valid driver’s license to commute to field sites. Ability to drive for up to 8 hours. Ability to work outdoors for up to week-long trips in variable weather conditions, operate 4WD vehicles, with and without trailers, and may include boats, wade in streams, and walk over uneven outdoor terrain carrying a 30 lb. backpack for up to 8 hours. Travel over uneven terrain, up and down steep terrain, long distances by foot in wet and cold weather to hot and dry weather. Occasional overnight camping and travel up to 20% to reach some project locations may be required. The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff. This position offers the possibility of a hybrid telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Basic principles of land, water, fish, wildlife, and other natural resources research; principles of ecology; soil and irrigation sciences, resource management, hydrology, geology, and waste prevention; s tatistical methods; land-use practices with reference to their general effect on human health, natural resources, agricultural productivity, and the environment; effects of hazardous and non-hazardous waste material and their interactions on the environment; chemical reactions; California and Federal environmental laws, rules, regulations, and requirements; basic toxicology, hydrology, geology, and principles of risk assessment and risk management; concepts employed in a variety of disciplines including environmental planning, economics, and resource management; geolocation and geo-referencing software applications, resource conservation program impacts and implementation strategies; and recycling issues.

  • Experience in land management, fire management, planning and project management, state contracting and procurement, native and invasive plant identification and surveys, vegetation mapping, ecological monitoring, proficiency of Geographic Information System (GIS) software, as well as various federal and state permitting processes related to CEQA, CESA, and LSA.
