Maintenance Mechanic
Job Summary
- McQuaid Jesuit, a Catholic school in Rochester, NY, teaching boys’ grades 6-12, seeking a Maintenance mechanic. This position is responsible for overall building maintenance including but not limited to opening and securing of the building; preventative maintenance of physical plant and building mechanics (electric; painting; plumbing; carpentry and year-round grounds keeping); set up and take down of events; emergency calls and may act as Facilities Director in that person’s absence.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide immediate response to building maintenance related urgencies (major water leaks, broken/hanging glass, natural gas odor, electrical hazards, removal of wildlife (bats, mice, bees, and birds)) or issues that affect the physical safety of McQuaid Jesuit High School), contain situation, determine and implement corrective/restorative actions, provide direction and notify appropriate personnel.
- Provide intermediate level skilled trade services and general repairs to building maintenance problems (not limited to plumbing, carpentry, doors and hardware, painting, drywall repair, windows and screens, roofing, masonry, hang banners, furniture repair, steam and natural gas piping, and window shade installation and repair, and external grounds keeping work including operation of all power lawn related equipment) under the direction of the Director of Facilities. Determine repair required and best course of action (time and cost) to complete (perform in-house or sub-contract).
- Perform Preventative Maintenance (PM) and inspections on multiple building systems including plumbing, doors and hardware, glazing, roofing, furniture, indoor and outdoor water systems, pumps, and HVAC related equipment.
- Athletic field layout: Responsible for accurate field measurements; all athletic fields including painting and maintaining throughout the appropriate seasons.

- Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule (nights and weekends) to provide support for facility-related events
Competencies/Skills
- Must have demonstrated mechanical aptitude in one of the skilled trade areas, and the ability to learn the basics of plumbing and pipefitting, painting, drywall (install and finish), door and window repair, and low voltage (50 volts or less) electrical systems.
- Must have strong analytical/problem solving skills.
- Must have good written and verbal communication skills. Must have good basic math skills.
- Must be self-motivated and have ability to work independently with minimal direction. Must have the ability to take initiative, plan, prioritize, and execute a variety of repairs.
- Must be willing to work in emergency situations to maintain conditions on the Campus as needed.
- Ability to safely operate all equipment including, but not limited to, hand and power tools.
- Able to work from various ladders up to 30 feet tall, including scaffolds and 40-foot man-lifts.
- Able to lift 50 lbs.
- Consistently work safely following all relative OSHA, DEC and EPA standards, laws and regulations.
- Ability to use software including Microsoft Outlook and other systems used by the school.
- Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule including call-in work that could encompass various shifts, weekends, holidays, emergencies, and times other than normal work schedules.
- Ability and willingness to provide contact information to be used for an on-call phone listing.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Three years’ experience in building maintenance in a commercial, industrial, or college campus setting with proven expertise in one or more of the following skilled areas; Plumbing, Millwright (doors and hardware), Painting and Drywall, and Flooring
- High School Diploma or GED, Valid Driver’s License – Class D.
- Trade or vocational training is preferred.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be on his/her feet for most of the shift. The position involves walking, standing, lifting and bending. The person is also required to talk or hear. The position is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms; stoop, and kneel. Frequent and regular repetitive movements required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
- Multi-story school buildings with regular school activities.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
- This is a 12-month, full-time position. (40 hours per week – non-exempt level position). Typically, the days of work and hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The schedule is determined by the facilities director. Hours may be adjusted depending on the needs of the department, including seasonal weather-related needs. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required due to nature of events and activities.

Salary Range: $22 – 27 an hour
