Position description

The University of California, Berkeley seeks a collaborative and user-centered librarian to join a team committed to teaching emerging scholars to approach research with confidence, creativity and critical insight, empowering them to access, critically evaluate, and use information to create and distribute their own research in a technologically evolving environment.

The Environment

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at the nation's premier public university. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 33,070 undergraduate students, 12,812 graduate students, and 1,525 faculty. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries, including the Doe Library, the Moffitt Library, The Bancroft Library, the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, and numerous subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 12 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive resources in a wide variety of formats and robust services to connect users with the collections and build their research skills. Discover more about our collections and services at the UC Berkeley Library website.

The Instruction Services Division (ISD) is a team of librarians and professional staff who provide leadership for all issues related to the Library's educational role such as student learning, information literacy, first-year and transfer student experience, reference and research services, assessment of teaching and learning, instructor development, and the design of physical and virtual learning environments. ISD supports course-aligned instruction, drop-in workshops, online guides, and individual research consultations. The division's work furthers the Library's involvement in curricular initiatives and emphasizes the opportunities associated with undergraduate education. ISD cultivates liaison relationships with campus partners and academic programs.

Moffitt Library, currently under construction and scheduled to reopen in Fall of 2026, is a hub for undergraduate learners on campus. Upon reopening, it will feature a set of newly designed spaces known as the Center for Connected Learning (CCL)—a mixture of collaborative study areas, research consultation suites, an event lounge, library makerspace, and updated library classroom to more deeply engage multidisciplinary, multimodal student inquiry. These spaces will center peer-led education, where students learn from both peers and experts in an environment unbound by disciplines or domain expertise. The CCL is run in partnership with students, and they are empowered to influence service and space design, structure, and policies. This position has a special focus on engaging undergraduate learning communities in the CCL, fostering formal and informal learning opportunities, contributing to a student-centered ethos, and connecting novice scholars to the Library's wealth of resources and programs.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of the Instruction Services Division (ISD), the Undergraduate Learning and Research Librarian actively participates in the Library's reference and instructional services, providing in-person and virtual services such as: reference, research consultations, course-integrated instruction, workshops, and helping steward the Library Prize for Undergraduate Research award committee. This librarian also collaborates with colleagues in ISD and across the Library to design instructional content to support undergraduate inquiry and discovery with a critical information literacy lens. This position plays a lead role in piloting, assessing, and adjusting spaces and services in the CCL and applies expertise in student-centered design and assessment. This position also plays a key role in user outreach and engagement by creating, deploying, and assessing outreach strategies such as: digital signage, exhibit content, student art displays, and event promotion.

The Undergraduate Learning and Research Librarian also supports peer-to-peer learning via the Undergraduate Library Fellows (ULF) program. The librarian in this position will collaborate with ISD colleagues to recruit, train, and mentor a team of 4-6 “research fellows” each year, providing them with training and growth opportunities and leading them in co-piloting service models to support undergraduate scholars in the CCL. This position will also liaise with campus partners such as Berkeley Discovery, aligning the CCL's programmatic offerings with campus-wide initiatives around research, learning, and discovery.

All UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Advancement is partially based upon professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.

The UC Berkeley Library is committed to supporting and encouraging respect and empathy, and nurturing a culture where all employees thrive. The Library seeks candidates who recognize and appreciate one another's contributions, expertise, and accomplishments, and who will strive to provide equitable access to a diverse set of collections and services. For more information, please see the UC Berkeley Library Statement of Values.

UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, the University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit. Librarians are entitled to appropriate professional development leave, vacation leave, sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel. The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans in addition to other benefits.
