Job Description

Position Description: Town School is seeking a collaborative and experienced educator to serve as a Lower School Reading Specialist for the 2025-2026 school year. The Reading Specialist is a specialized practitioner providing literacy support to students, faculty members, and families. The Reading Specialist supports the Lower School reading program by assessing students, at times working with full classes, and typically working with individual children or small groups of students requiring intervention. Additionally, this position works with faculty and parents to ensure that reading strategies for intervention are well understood and supported in the school community. 

Duties and responsibilities of the job: 

Coordination of Services

  • Coordinate and facilitate the school’s K-2 literacy intervention program as a member of the reading team.
  • Participate in the Student Referral Process.

Student Identification and Assessment

  • Identify students in need of literacy support in consultation with faculty and administration.
  • Conduct formal and informal reading screenings and assessments.

Intervention Support

  • Provide direct literacy support to identified students in 1:1, small, or whole-group settings.
  • Assess and teach small groups of students in grades K-2 using a pull-out model of instruction and a targeted literacy intervention model with research-based strategies and resources.
  • Provide intervention support for specific skills for individual students.

Collaboration with Faculty

  • Collaborate with faculty members to modify curricula and/or implement instructional techniques.
  • Help teachers design and implement strategies and accommodations to support individual students' learning needs.

Student Development

  • Help students develop effective learning strategies that promote academic improvement.
  • Provide student observations with verbal and written feedback for teachers, administration, and parents.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Attend faculty meetings and fulfill weekly lunch and recess duty obligations.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences held twice each year.
  • Attend professional development to enhance personal knowledge of pedagogy and content, especially in literacy.
  • Maintain and submit accurate and up-to-date management records of all students’ progress.
  • Frequently and effectively communicate with other faculty and with parents about student progress.
  • Take an active role in the school by contributing to committees, chaperoning field trips, and attending student performances and athletic events.

Salary information: The anticipated annual base salary range the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the 80% Lower School Reading Specialist position is $60,000 - $104,000, depending on factors such as years of experience. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity with our current employees as part of any final offer.

Desired Qualifications and Skills include:

  • Reading Specialist Teaching Credential and a minimum of two years of teaching experience providing small group reading instruction to elementary grade students. 
  • Deep knowledge of the instruction of reading, writing, and spelling. 
  • Experience with and/or training in Slingerland or Orton Gillingham is preferred as is knowledge of Fountas and Pinnell Literacy and the Benchmark Assessment System.
  • Candidates should demonstrate passion for working with Lower School students and be knowledgeable about this developmental stage of growth in boys.
  • Some background in the area of social and emotional learning which is as important as the academic curriculum at Town.
  • Trained in the Responsive Classroom approach.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate closely with other reading teachers, classroom teachers, Learning Resource specialists, and the Lower School Head. Good communication skills are essential.
  • Instructional approaches should be differentiated to suit a range of learning levels and styles and reflect a diversity of perspectives and backgrounds.
  • Commitment to developing one’s own cultural competency
